Do you think your voice is weird? You don’t want to break your voice? Believe it or not, you can change your current voice, even into adulthood. Almost every aspect of voice, from depth to volume, can be changed with enough practice. A person’s way of speaking includes problems with pronunciation, which can all be changed or improved.
Check current voice
Understand the different elements that make up voice. The first step to improving your voice is to capture the characteristics of your existing voice. There are 6 main elements that make up the voice:
Volume: How loud do you speak?
Clear: Do you slur or mumble?
Quality: Do you speak nasally, windy, or hoarse?
Overall Pitch: Is your voice high or low?
Pitch Variation: Does your voice stay normal, neither up nor down?
Speed: Do you speak too fast or too slow?
Voice recording. To better capture your own voice, you need to record and listen. This may not be a lot of fun at first as many people don’t like their own voice when recording, but it most closely represents your voice as heard by others. Record your voice with software like Garageband, then play it back and notice what makes up your voice, like volume, clarity, quality, pitch, oscillation, and speed degree.
Recording and listening to your own voice helps you have a more objective view of your voice to the listener. Take note of the things that don’t work out in your speech, like muttering, using lots of backing, speaking in a nasal voice, and more. Remember to write down the points that you notice.
What do you want your voice to be? Take a look at your notes about your voice, its weaknesses, and then think about how you would like your voice to change. Everyone has different voice development goals. For example, women with a low, hoarse voice want their voice to be higher, or men with a high, fast voice want to speak in a lower, slower voice.
Plan to change your voice
Improve breathing. The voice originates from the breath, so a good voice requires good breathing. Ideally, breathe from the diaphragm, slowly, steadily. Start the exercise by placing your hands on your belly and breathing deeply to feel your belly rise and fall with each breath. Practice this breathing exercise several times a day.
Another breathing exercise is to read a passage with short sentences of varying lengths. Use one deep breath for each sentence, exhaling slowly while reading aloud. Then inhale again and start reading the next sentence. This is just a breathing exercise, you should not apply it in daily conversations.
Speak slowly and remove buffers. Speaking quickly makes you look less confident, and makes it difficult for your listeners to understand. One way to instantly improve voice quality is to slow down. You can practice by reading the text aloud, first at your normal speed, then gradually slow down. Another exercise is to read a long series of numbers like a phone number, while reading and drawing numbers in the air with your hands. That is the ideal reading speed of a clear, natural voice.
Pitch control. Depending on your natural pitch and variation, you’ll need to practice more or less. Test your overall pitch by speaking in a lower tone, as often as you can. However, you need to change the tone slowly, about half a tone at a time. To speak with different pitches, try to raise and lower your voice in a sentence to make the sentence more expressive. Two exercises are performed as follows:
Practice repeating two-syllable words with varying pitch. There are 4 pitches: high, low, high and low, and low and high.
Repeat a sentence and change the emphasis. For example, say “I didn’t steal this car”, first tap on the word “I” to emphasize you are not stealing, then tap on the word “no” to emphasize what you can do. with the car rather than stealing it, then emphasize “this car” to show that you stole something else, not the car.
Open mouth and jaw. Practice talking with your mouth and jaw muscles relaxed. The best way to do this is to practice, exaggerate the facial movements when speaking. Open your mouth to say “oh” and “ah”, and let your jaw muscles open. Practice this exercise regularly every day.
Practice to relax your voice. If your voice is uncomfortable, you’ll speak with the sound coming from your throat, not your diaphragm, and your voice will be strained, harsh, and strained. Follow this method several times a day to relax your voice:
Place your hand over your throat and speak normally, noticing times when your throat and jaw are tight.
Yawn loudly and let your jaws open as wide as possible, as long as they are comfortable. End the yawn by humming “ho-hum”. Continue “hum” for a few seconds with your lips closed, and move your jaw muscles back and forth a few times. Practice this exercise several times a day.
Say the words “hang”, “harm”, “lane”, “main”, “lone “, “loom”. Exaggerate facial muscle movements when pronouncing these words. Yawn again every time your throat gets a little tired.
Use your fingers to gently massage your throat muscles.
Relax your throat by slowly repeating the following sounds: “nay,” “nay,” “nee,” “no ,” “noo.”
Improve your voice even more
Listen for details in the voice. To edit the details in your voice, you need to record your voice again. Record when reading a long text, do your best to speak in a relaxed, slow, clear voice. Listen to the recording and take note of the points that are not good. Read the text again, correcting the original mistakes. Compare the original and second recordings to see the progress. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with your voice.
Practice this exercise regularly to target the part of your voice that you most want to improve.
Listen to people with beautiful voices. Download podcasts and audiobooks, and take a moment to listen to these authors’ voices. Listen carefully to how they control their voices, how they pronounce their voices clearly and up and down. Part of vocal training is becoming aware of what a good voice sounds like. At the same time, people naturally learn from good role models, so if you listen to good speakers, your voice will also improve dramatically.
